Norma J. (Alft) Hanson, 88, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill.
Norma was born in Merrill on February 15, 1935, the daughter of the late George and Renate (Siesennop) Alft. A graduate of Merrill High School, she married Carleton ‘Cart’ Hanson on September 12, 1953. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1985.
Norma had been a homemaker during her marriage; after Cart’s death, she worked at Campbell’s Clothes and Things for 4 ½ years and then at Ace Hardware for over 21 years.
She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill, belonging to various organizations there. Norma also was a former member of the Valparaiso Guild and the Good Samaritan Volunteers.
Norma enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing bridge. On a hot day, Norma and her friends were once spotted playing bridge at a table in the lake. Norma also enjoyed attending Wisconsin Badger football games. She loved spending time at the cabin on Tug Lake and the cottage in Manitowish Waters.
Survivors include her cousins and close friends. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Carleton ‘Cart’ Hanson; parents, George and Renate Alft; and her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick C. and Diane Hanson.
The funeral service for Norma will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 29, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. The Rev. David Szeto will officiate. Burial will take place in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church. Taylor-Stine Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Merrill, is assisting the family.
