Emmit T. Winchell, age 77, of Merrill, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. Emmit was born October 1, 1944, in Tomahawk, son of the late Stillman and Cornelia (Amelse) Winchell. He married Donna Waschick on May 4, 1974. She survives. At the time of his retirement, Emmit was a Facility Repair Worker at the Merrill and Mosinee National Guard Armory’s. He was a ‘jack of all trades’ and could fix anything. In his younger years Emmit enjoyed both hunting and fishing. Emmit honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1966 until 1968, and he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Emmit is survived by his wife, Donna Winchell of Merrill; two sons, Emmit M. Winchell of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and Josh (Nyssa) Winchell of Wausau; two sisters, Sandy Winchell of Merrill and Anna Winchell of Wausau; and five brothers, Levi Winchell and Edmund Winchell both of Merrill, Gerald (Nancy) Winchell of Mayville, Gerard Winchell of Rothschild, and Louis (Mary Ann) Winchell of Hatley. Emmit was preceded in death by his parents, Stillman and Cornelia Winchell; three siblings, infant Agnes Winchell and Carol Winchell and Susan Winchell. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 6, 2022, at Taylor-Stine Funeral Home in Merrill. Burial of Emmit’s cremated remains will take place in St. Francis Xavier Veteran’s Memorial, with graveside military rites conducted by the Merrill V.F.W. Post 1638 Honor Guard.
