Earl E. ‘Bud’ Schuman, age 98, of Merrill, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital, Weston. As his family affectionately stated, “Bud died from complications of living a long life”. Bud was born February 19, 1920, in Merrill, son of the late Louis and Lynn (Tholl) Schuman. He married Patricia M. ‘Pat’ Jager on May 13, 1950, in Merrill. Pat preceded him in death on March 19, 2003. Bud graduated from Merrill Senior High School in 1938. While attending high school Bud played and ‘lettered’ in football. Years later Bud became a member of the ‘Merrill Silver M Club’ and had attained both Gold M and Diamond M status. Bud also played with the Merrill Foxes, a semi-professional football team. Bud was a retired employee of the former Ward Paper Company, Merrill. Prior to the mill, Bud had worked in a Civil Conservation Camp in the Tomahawk area, and had been a cement mason with a construction company. Bud enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on Bass Lake in the Harrison Hills, deer hunting, fishing, gardening, and baking pumpkin pies. Bud honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and participated in the Normandy invasion. He was a member and past commander of the Merrill V.F.W. Post 1638. Bud is survived by three daughters, Ann (Roger) Schroeder, Gleason, Geri (Teri) Larkee, Neenah, and Mary Kay Schuman, Anderson, South Carolina; two sons, Leon (Lucy) Schuman, El Paso, Texas, and Larry (Elaine) Schuman, Oregon, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Frank, Adam, Aimee, Molly, Kate, Beth, and Chris; four great grandchildren, Isaiah, Eleanor, Julian, and Margot; and one brother, Richard (Marg) Schuman, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Besides his wife and parents, Bud is preceded in death by three siblings, Phyllis Morrison and Leon and Robert Schuman. A Memorial Service for Bud will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Father Chris Kemp will officiate. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at Taylor-Stine. Following the memorial service, military rites will be conducted by the Merrill V.F.W. Post 1638 Honor Guard. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. Online condolences may be made at www.taylorstinefuneralhome.com.
